Namda

This small display highlights the forgotten technique of namda, a felted sheep’s wool necessary for dhurrie rugs and decorative floor mats in various parts of Rajasthan. The fibre waste from these carpets, pressed into the niches of the carved wood, provides the key ingredient for making unique jajam blocks. Meet Abdul Sattar Kharadi – descendent from a long-line of block carvers and part of a small community of artisans still practising the ancestral methods at his workshop in Purana Basti, Jaipur.
